The differences between oil and acrylic

Oil vs. acrylic paint

Colors and mixtures: firstly, the biggest difference between both paints is their composition. Oil is oil-based, while acrylic is water-based. For this very reason, they cannot be mixed with each other. That said, oil paint has more variety in its colors, and they mix better. However, acrylic also has an enormous variety of colors, although these can change once dry. Furthermore, although they mix well, with acrylic we must be faster, as it dries more quickly.

Drying and correction: as we mentioned, acrylic paint dries in a few minutes. In contrast, oil can take days for the paint to be dry to the touch, and even years to dry completely. This can be an advantage or disadvantage, depending on the painter's method. If you like to take your time, oil will be ideal for you. If you like to work at an accelerated pace, you will have no problem with acrylic.

On the other hand, it is easier to correct errors with acrylic paint. Once dry, it is easy to remove with a cloth. Even if a mark remains on the canvas, a new layer of paint will completely cover it. For its part, to remove dry oil you will need to use turpentine or white spirit. If it is wet, you can remove it with a spatula.

Budget: generally, oil is more expensive than acrylic. However, paintings made with the former are usually more expensive as well. Therefore, although you make a greater investment, you should also obtain more profit. For its part, acrylic is ideal for those who are starting out and do not have a large budget.
